Q. What is it?

You have a very small cancer in the chest, or there is something in your breast that can be. The plan is to take the diseased part of the chest with a clear rim of breast cancer in good health. Before your operation

• You will be admitted either the day of the operation or the day before.
• You will be asked to sign a consent form, if it has not already been done.
• You may be asked to wear TED stockings. These help to prevent blood clots in the legs.
• You may receive a small injection which also helps prevent blood clots. This is usually given twice a day.
• You will be asked to nil by mouth for several hours before your operation. You will be informed of when it will start.

Postoperatively

• You can drink and eat as soon as you feel able.
• You will be able to get out of bed if you feel well enough.
• You can have one or two drains in place, they can be up to several days.
• Your bandages will be removed after 2-3 days.
• You will receive more information before going home.
• You receive the results of the operation as soon as possible. This means coming to the outpatient clinic. An appointment will be arranged for you.
• You will probably be submitted to Mr. Burt, Consultant Oncologist, who is based at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Operation

• Wide local excision means that the breast tumor will be removed with some surrounding tissue appears healthy. These are then analyzed after the operation.
• Physicians will then be able to tell you if they feel enough tissue was removed.
• Sometimes people need to have a new operation, if the disease has spread beyond the tissue that was removed the first time.
• You may also be advisable to have some or all of your lymph glands in your armpit removed. This can be done with only one incision in the breast or with a second under his arm.
