What is acne?

MM: Acne is producing more oil which leads to clogged pores and break outs often called pimples, zits, white, black lesions or cysts.

Where can outbreaks of acne occur most often?

Who is most likely to be affected by acne?

GM: Typically, young men because their bodies tend to produce high levels of testosterone to stimulate growth, which tends to over stimulate the sebaceous glands to over produce oil which is a major cause of acne.

The girls usually present with a break before their menstrual cycle. However, those with more severe attacks need to look in several key causes such as PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome), heavy and painful periods that may indicate endometriosis. What are the causes of acne?

MM: The etiology of acne is unknown. However, acne can result from several factors, including increased levels of hormones. In males testosterone or androgens. In females, androgens respectively. The increase in androgen levels can stimulate the sebaceous glands to become enlarged and production of oil is no longer grow. Increased production of oil can clog the pores with oil or sebum (white thick substance) which cause the cell walls of the pores of the skin to breakdown. This process allows bacteria to form and thus to develop knobs.
