Surgical resection is the process by which the tumor is removed surgically, which is usually recommended when the cancer has not metastasized (or spread) beyond the lungs to other parts of the body.

There are several options to perform a resection may include the minimally invasive operation or complete. Which technique is used will depend on various factors including the size and stage of cancer and if the tumor can be accessed by a surgeon.

A thoracotomy is performed by the surgeon makes an incision in the chest wall and a median sternotomy is performed by entering the chest cavity through the sternum. These two methods are commonly used in surgery for lung cancer, but they involve considerable patient discomfort and extended hospital stays with a longer recovery period.

Other surgical procedures include anterior limited thoracotomy (ALT) which involves a small incision to allow entry, again from the front of the chest. It should be noted that the incision is significantly lower than in a standard thoracotomy or median sternotomy. An alternative is the anterior axillary thoracotomy (AAT) that involves a small incision on the front of the chest, but near the armpit, and finally there is the posterolateral thoracotomy (PLT) which involves an incision in the back or side of the trunk of the patient.

Even with these improved surgical techniques, patients suffer severe pain if the operation involves opening the chest (sometimes referred to doctors as "cracking the chest").

In consequence of the prolonged recovery time and patient discomfort, surgical techniques have been developed that do not involve surgery full - these are supposedly the minimally invasive techniques.

Video-assisted thoracoscopy (TVA) uses a high powered video camera and screen hi-definition combined analysis of diagnosis, such as CT or PET scans, to target tumors in the lungs of the patient. The incision required is much smaller and there is no need to open the chest resulting in less discomfort for the patient and reduces payback periods. Using the video display, the surgeon is able to resect tumors that were identified during the diagnosis and staging phases.

Some doctors caution the use of VAT However, as a traditional thoracotomy may reveal tumors and metastases of other cancers that have not been found in the analysis and diagnosis. If they continue to discover the cancer may return and the patient is sick again and for that reason, the VAT is generally recommended for early stage (I & II) and cancers that have spread to other the lungs and body.

It is quite normal for any surgical procedure must be accompanied by a phase of chemotherapy or radiotherapy to ensure that cancer patients have been completely removed or killed. How the treatment product and at what stage a particular treatment will be recommended will be determined by the type and stage of lung cancer a patient has had.
