Osteoarthritis ArthritisCan you have rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis?

I have osteoarthritis in the knee and I am now having blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis.Coul I have two types at the same time?

Yes you can, most patients with rheumatoid arthritis eventually develop some arthritis. But OA does not predispose to arthritis is an autoimmune condition.

Yes.

Osteoarthritis is wear and tear. "Its something that happens with time and use of a joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory process, a disease in its own right to attack the joints. Its perfectly possible to have already worn joints attacked and aggravated, or joints that have been attacked more sensitive to future wear.

Unfortunately yes! These are diseases with different pathogenic mechanisms and they can easily coexist (EP knee OA and a new IE for hands). It is important to differentiate between them because of the different management. Speaking of arthritis of the knees, do not forget to ask your doctor about psoriatic arthritis!
