MarketplaceLow Glycemic Index DietPosted on March 31, 2010. Can someone explain a low glycemic index diet for me please? I have PCOS and said that the scheme would be best for me to continue. But because I'm young, I do not really understand how that effects PCOS my body and what I do to get it under control. If someone could please explain to me from personal experience, I'd be very grateful. A diet low glycemic index (low GI diet) is a diet consisting mainly of low GI carbohydrates. Basically low GI carbohydrates raise your blood glucose very slowly over a long period of time, while high carbohydrate advanced IM your blood sugar quickly. It is sometimes recommended for PCOS patients because people with PCOS have a higher risk of developing diabetes type II, and a diet full of high GI carbs is also thought to promote diabetes. You can probably find lots of information about which foods are high GI compared to low GI, but in general:
- Tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, etc.) tend to be high GI, while "the continent" fruit (blueberries, apples) tend to be low GI
- Breads, including whole wheat breads, tend to be high GI, the less they are made with cracked wheat
- Pasta is low GI (phew!)
- Most grains such as bulgur, quinoa and rice are low GI way. The shorter grains of rice, plus GI
- Biscuits and cakes are generally high GI
- Beans / Legumes are generally very low GI
- Vegetables tend to be everywhere. Personally, I do not think people should refuse to eat all vegetables, even if it has a high GI because of the magnitude of health benefits other
- All with added sugar tend to be high GI
That's all I can think of from the top of my head. Here are a couple sites with info:

I hope this helped!
