Dcis Breast Cancer

Dcis Breast CancerThe hereditary breast cancer DCIS?

My 29 year old sister was diagnosed with DCIS breast cancer and I wonder if I should have some type of screening done, there are also other family members who have had breast cancer on my side of fathers of the family.

Only about 5-10% of breast cancers are hereditary. However, because your sister is so young it is feared the possibility. You do not mention your age or who had a cancer family members or how old they were at the time of diagnosis. The answers to these questions to help determine the probability. It also helps to know if all were male or if someone had cancer of the ovary.

I'm sure your sister's oncologist will visit all this with her. They should have tested your sister to see if it has one of the BRCA genes. It is much easier and less expensive to check a patient with known cancer .. If she tests positive, you must also be tested. If she tested negative that you do not need to be tested, because it is not hereditary.

However, even if it is not hereditary you'd still be at a higher risk of breast cancer so you should start screening now. Screening is not normally recommended for women up to age 40 if you are under 40 be clear with your doctor about your family history. If you are aged 30-35 you need a little testicles that breast tissue in younger women is usually too dense to see anything on the mammogram.
