Side effects of the vaccine against cervical cancer So, here's the scoop ... It was really to be the vaccine against cervical cancer, because 99% of cervical cancers linked to HPV. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that has many different strains (ie, HPV-1, HPV-2, etc.). Some strains of HPV can cause common warts on the feet, hands, etc. Then there are sexually transmitted strains of HPV that cause genital and anal warts. STDs other strains of HPV have been associated with various cancers (penis, rectum). Even other STDs strains of HPV (there are lots!) Have been linked to cancer of the cervix (called high-risk strains). As I mentioned earlier, studies show that 99% of women with cervical cancer also have HPV. However, not everyone is against the high risk HPV will develop cancer of the cervix. Most cases of HPV (all strains) are cleared naturally by the body within two years. Sometimes, the high risk HPV cons will stay longer for these women to their risk of cancer of the cervix increases. However, they still can not get cancer of the cervix, because the high-risk HPV and a few other things (that are not yet understood), and the cause of cervical cancer. It's like an equation: risk HPV + X + Y = cancer of the cervix. So the idea is that if we can vaccinate the high risk HPV, HPV we can take the equation and we hope to reduce the risk of developing cancer of the cervix. In the States we now Gardisil vaccine against HPV, which covers: 1. Two strains of high-risk HPV that are responsible for 70% of cases of cervical cancer and 2. Girls Currently, it is approved and females 9-26 years and is given to a series of three shot (at 0, 2 months and 6 months). Even with the vaccine, there is a risk of getting HPV high risk because 1) it does not protect you 100% and 2) it does not cover 30% of strains of high-risk HPV that can lead to cervical cancer of the uterus. Common side effects include pain and swelling at the injection site, headache, fever, loss of consciousness. More serious side effects, seizures, Guillain-Barre syndrome, severe allergic reactions and 17 deaths (even if they were judged to be unrelated). So ... does it work? Well, for now studies show it works very well to prevent genital warts and abnormal Pap smears. But because it is new, there are some problems to solve ... 1. Studies show that the vaccine protected three sides for at least five years, you do not know if girls / women need later, a booster 2. It is assumed that because the vaccine decreased abnormal Pap smears that reduce the incidence of cancer cervix too much though because cancer of the cervix usually takes at least 10 years to appear after HPV high risk and it is still relatively early in the test girls / women, it is not yet proven.
