How are cataracts treated?
In their early stages, cataracts can be treated with glasses, magnifiers, or increased lighting. As the disease progresses, however, these measures do not suffice. When the cataract or cataract worsened enough to affect your daily life, it is difficult to drive, read, or perform daily tasks, surgery is probably necessary.
Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens of the eye and replaced by an intraocular lens. The lens focuses the artificial light in the same way as your natural lens, the restoration of your vision to normal. Surgery is usually an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia, and often, you can resume your normal activities the next day.
It is possible to live with cataracts for a number of years without having to undergo surgery. Careful assessment at regular visits to your ophthalmologist can help you monitor the status of your eyes to determine when and whether cataract surgery is necessary.
